Lutheran World Federation
.
.
Bishop Munib Younan (above right) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL), was elected on Saturday 24 July to beh the President of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF). He received 300 votes (there were 23 against and 37 abstentions). The LWF is a global family of over 120 Churches. I have known Bishop Younan for many years, beginning from my first visits to the Holy Land. He is a passionate voice for justice and peace, not only in his homeland the Middle East, but around the world.
.
His election is good news for Anglican-Lutheran relations here in Europe, strengthened in recent years by the Porvoo and Meissen agreements. Bishop Younan is a strong advocate of the ecumenical commitments of the LWF; he is personally well aquainted with ecumenical life in our continent. After his ordination he studied and earned a degree in Helsinki, and speaks fluent Finnish!
.
In his acceptance speech, Bishop Younan recalled that he was first introduced to the LWF through a cup of chocolate milk. He and his family were Palestinian refugees in the 1950s. At the Martin Luther School in Jerusalem, through a gift of the LWF, a daily cup of chocolate milk was offered to the students. Bishop Younan explained, “The chocolate milk physically nourished us refugees and was the answer to our prayer, ‘Give Us Today Our Daily Bread.’ It also nurtured in us knowledge of the theology of the Lutheran communion; it taught us about God’s love.” His election to the LWF's top post will give the dimished and beleagered Arab Christian community in the Holy Land and other countries new courage.
.
.
EUROPE AND THE CROSS.
.
.
The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg is facing widespread opposition to its ruling from last November against the display of crucifixes in Italian schools. An additional 20 countries have now joined Italy in defense of the public display of the cross.
.
At first 10 countries asked the court to annul the November decision: Armenia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Lithuania, Malta, Monaco, Romania, Russia and San Marino. Lithuania compared the banning to the religious persecution it suffered under communism, when religious symbols were similary banned from the classroom. Now another 10 countries have called the decision of the court into question: Albania, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, FYR Macedonia, Moldavia, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine. The governments of these countries have requested that national religious identities and traditions be respected, pointing out that in many countries, religious identity is a basis of the values, and a source of European unity.
.
There are 47 member states in the Council of Europe. With Italy, there are now 21 which publicly oppose November's ruling. Ironically, the Council of Europe states in its founding charter that there is an "unbreakable attachment" of the peoples of Europe to "the spiritual and moral values that make up its common patrimony."
.
(The Diocese in Europe has a presence in all these countries with the exception of Albania, Lithuania, Moldavia and San Marino).

New Governor General is Anglican
.
.
Canada’s next governor general, David Johnston, is a respected academic and lawyer. He is also Anglican. Currently the president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo, Johnston will succeed Governor General Michaelle Jean when her term ends on Oct. 1.
.
“David Johnston represents the best of Canada,” said Prime Minister Stephen Harper in a statement. “He represents hard work, dedication, public service and humility. I am confident he will continue to embody these traits in his new role as the Crown’s representative in Canada.”
.
Harper extolled Johnston’s “strong record of public service” and his “extensive legal expertise.”
.
Johnston has served as president and vice-chancellor of McGill University and has taught law at other prominent Canadian universities, including the University of Toronto, Queen’s University and the University of Western Ontario.
.
The Globe and Mail noted that while Johnston is known for his leadership skills and has a lot of legal and policy knowledge that will put him in good stead as governor general, he will likely draw on his Anglican faith for support. It noted that in a recent update for Harvard University, where he graduated with a degree in government and international relations (1963), Johnston had written about “a growing sense of the spiritual side of life.”
.
Johnston, 69, is married to Dr. Sharon Johnston, and they reside in Heidelberg, Ont. They have five children and seven grandchildren.

An octopus in Germany has given his final prediction for the World Cup. Could he be right once again?!
.
Paul, who lives in an aquarium in the city of Oberhausen, has so far got every Germany result right during the competition, even when he predicted Germany would crash out to Spain.
.
His keepers put two glasses in his tank showing the flags of the two teams that are playing and Paul has to pick a tasty snack from the winner's glass.
.
This time he's predicted Spain will win the World Cup! And Spain won the Cup!!!

A ROYAL EXPERIENCE
.
.
It is Sunday, July 4th, 2010 and the alarm clock rang at 6:00 a.m. as usual, but today rang with a special motivation. In four more hours we must be seated at St. James’ Cathedral to enjoy a Choral Mattins (Choral Morning Prayer) where Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh are attending.

After the security control at the entrance of the cathedral, we moved to our designated location, the 14th row of pews. There were great expectations for the great moment, maybe for the majority it was their first time to see the monarch directly.

10:40 the choir and clergy enter the cathedral.
10: 45 the Premier of Ontario entered
10:49 the General Lieutenant entered
11:00 silence invaded the cathedral and the Queen arrived
11:01 the Queen & the Duke took their places
11:03 we sang the Royal Anthem
11:04 we sang the National Anthem
11:05 the liturgy for Mattins started and was led by Archbishop Johnson
11:50 the Queen presented a gift to the Mohawk representatives on occasion of the 300th anniversary of the visit of 4 Mohawks to Queen Ann.
11:55 the Queen & representatives rededicated St. George’s Chapel destroyed by fire in 2008.
11:57 Her Majesty unveiled a commemorative plaque at the chapel
11:58 The Queen and the Duke signed the visitor book
12:00 The Queen left the cathedral with Archbishop Johnson.

The liturgy was very traditional and was sung by the choir of St. James’ Cathedral, the 34 singers did an amazing performance singing the Venite, Psalm 87, Te Deum Laudamus, Jubilate Deo, the Anthem, commissioned by Mr. Eric Hanbury to commemorate the Royal Visit. We sung two hymns: “Praise to the Lord....” (Tune: Lobe den Herren) and “From all that dwell below the skies” (Tune: Lasst Uns Erfreuen). It seems to me that everybody wanted to sing even louder and better having the Queen in the same service, obviously was a great motivation to thank God.

The homily was brief, only 8 minutes, and is was not transcendental in content. The readers where the two chaplains of Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal of the Mohawk, at St. Paul’s Grand River Territory and Christ Church Tyendinaga Territory.

At the exit of the cathedral , there was a big crowd waiting to greet the Queen and the Duke. The Queen was very friendly to the people and she looked great in her beautiful dress and hat in bright light blue. The Queen smiled to me when I waved my hand when she was passing by and she left for the Royal York Hotel from lunch and then to continue at Woodbine for the Queen’s Plate.

It was a great experience to see very close the Queen and the Duke, and to worship with the Head of The Church of England to the same God in the same spirit and faith.
God Save the Queen!

WEEKLY SMILE: "Actions speaks louder than words but not nearly as often." Mark Twain

WHO IS WHO?: Each month we will have a new person to discover! A few clues and let us guess the person's identity: Sits at the very north side (middle back) of the Nave, always very elegant, does not stay for coffee time, a person of few words. So, who is our person of July? Let us know during the coffee hour.

VISIT OUR BLOG MORE OFTEN: We invite you to visit more often our blog, and click here: http://saintpaul-runnymede.blogspot.com It is very easy to use and to read. It is an option to our web page and it is updated very often. Add this blog into your FAVOURITES in your computer. Let us know how we can improve this new channel of contact and communication. Thanks.

TENANTS: The Ukrainian Co-op Nursery is no longer our tenant in our Community Centre's building, the leasing agreement ended on June 30, 2010. We enjoyed five years of good relationship with them. We are looking for new tenants to rent out the same facilities which used the previous tenant.

RECTORY: The family Nganga left vacant the rectory after 5 years of living there. The Ngangas bought their own house in the area of Brampton and we wish to them all the best in their new stage of life.
